Quick Driving Tips for Sicily

Here are additional driving tips to help you navigate Sicily safely:

  1. In Italy, you always drive on the right-hand side of the road.

  2. Narrow, Winding Roads: Many roads, especially in rural or historic areas, are narrow and full of tight curves. Drive cautiously and be prepared for sudden turns.

  3. Navigation & Signage: While apps like Google Maps or Waze are crucial, don't rely solely on them. They might occasionally route you through unsuitable roads, against traffic, or even into restricted ZTL zones. Always double-check road signs to avoid fines and violations.

  4. Watch for Two-Wheelers: Scooters and motorcycles are common and can appear unexpectedly, so keep a close eye on them.

  5. Speed & Enforcement: Adhere to local speed limits, as many areas are monitored by cameras that enforce strict penalties.

  6. Defensive Driving: Sicilian drivers can be assertive. Stay alert, anticipate unpredictable moves from other drivers, and don’t hesitate to use your horn when needed.

  7. City Traffic: In busy urban centers, be extra cautious of pedestrians, cyclists, and sudden stops.

ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) areas are restricted to pedestrians and select vehicles. Avoid these zones to prevent fines, as cameras monitor entrances and fines can be processed months after your trip—with additional charges from your rental company.

Parking

Parking in Sicily can be tricky, that's why we suggest renting a smaller car if you can. Here are some tips to help you with parking.

  • White Lines: Free parking

  • Blue Lines: Paid parking—look for ticket machines (they might be a bit far)

  • Yellow Lines: Reserved for disabled people and residents

For added convenience, download the EasyPark app. It's widely used in Sicily to help you locate available parking and pay digitally.

Avoid leaving any valuables visible in your car—even something as trivial as an empty sunglasses case can attract unwanted attention.
